On 05/08/2017 AE Wood Products became the 1st company in Southern California to own and operate a Woodmizer 1000 Sawmill.
Our Lucas 10" sawmill and dedicated slabber allow us to mobilize almost anywhere and salvage logs that otherwise might be cut into firewood or been deemed unaccessible and left to rot.
On 03/18/2015 Vic Leader of Arrowhead Enterprises, Inc. picked up his new Woodmizer LT Super 70 Wide sawmill. Zero to sawing in 10 seconds. This mill will saw a 40” diameter log and can make 34” wide slab cuts.
We have a Woodmizer KD 250 Kiln to dry and heat treat our wood products.
This Kiln uses airflow and vacuum pressure to treat our wood products. The vacuum pressure it can build up is similar to that of top of Mt Everest.
The SlabMizer MB200 Slab Flattener efficiently surfaces and flattens wood slabs, boards, burls, cookies, and other wide material with minimal labor.
"Vic’s background in woodworking and his desire to work in the timber industry, led Vic to found Arrowhead Enterprises, a forest care thinning,
logging, hauling, and custom milling company. In addition to successfully using a helicopter on more than 20 separate projects, the more traditional thinning and logging operations”- TimberWest Magazine November/December 2011
There’re three main things that harm wood: heat, moisture and sunlight. If you can avoid these things in extremes your wood should be fine. Placing the slab in your garage or shop is probably for the best as the temperatures wont fluctuate as much. I also recommend after sanding to seal as soon as possibly, on the topic of sealing. You need to seal both sides of the wood if you don’t the slab will cup.
Cupping
Cupping occurs when the moisture in the wood is only leaving one side of the slab. If your piece begins to cup you can flip the piece in an attempt to reverse it. Time varies depending on the type of wood, softer woods take about two days to two weeks as where harder woods take two weeks to two months.
Sunlight
Sunlight leeches color from wood and leaves it oxidized. Some people enjoy sun bleaching the wood for a more rustic look. If that’s not your style sanding the wood down should remove the oxidation and return it to normal.
Moisture
Moisture is the biggest factor with most problems of wood. The Moisture in the wood leaving to quickly can cause cracks. Adding moisture raises the grain of the wood which can be used to add texture to the piece which could be good or bad depending on what you’re going for.
Temperature
Fluctuations in Temperature can be devastating causing warping and cracking. To avoid this put the wood in your garage or shop.
Cleaning Live Edge Slabs
I would recommend warm water and vinegar to clean your Live Edge Slab. Wood is as natural product as it gets so use natural cleaning products clean it, avoid harsh chemicals.
This all being said still expect it to move slightly with minor cracks and warping, it is wood after all. The sooner you work the piece and seal it the better.
