Black Oak

Black Oak—one of nature's gifts to woodworkers. Known for its strength, beauty, and durability, it's a wood that demands respect and rewards those who approach it with patience and skill.

The California Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii) is a deciduous tree native to the western United States, particularly in California and Oregon. It typically grows in mountainous regions at elevations between 1,500 to 6,000 feet. The tree can reach heights of 30 to 80 feet, with a wide, spreading canopy and deeply lobed leaves that turn vibrant colors in the fall. Its bark is dark and furrowed, often appearing nearly black.

The Beauty of Black Oak for Woodworking

Black Oak, with its deep, rich color and distinctive grain, is a favorite among woodworkers for both its aesthetic and functional qualities. The heartwood ranges from golden to a medium to dark brown, occasionally with a hint of red, making it a stunning choice for tables, bar tops, mantels, shelves, headboards and more.

Black Oak and Epoxy Resin

Black Oak is striking when paired with the customizable nature of epoxy resin. The result is a beautiful contrast that can elevate any piece of furniture or decor. The natural imperfections and unique grain patterns of Black Oak provide the perfect canvas for the resin to fill and highlight. It has long been a favorite of our makers for tables, charcuterie boards, and wall art.

All of wood slabs are California wood, but our Black Oak is from our mountain. We have all sizes from narrow and thin to table sized. We have rounds, croutch pieces, mantle cuts, shelf cuts and more.
